Wegovy tablets follow a step-by-step dosing schedule designed to help your body adjust gradually while treatment progresses. While the treatment pathway is guided by set dose increases, it is not a one-size-fits-all journey, so when you increase depends on how you respond.
In this guide, we’ll explain how Wegovy tablet dosages work, when doses may be increased and how to find the right balance between effectiveness and comfort with the support of your prescriber.
Key points
- Wegovy tablets are taken once every day, with a standard dosing schedule increasing the dose every month until maintenance, though this may vary for individuals.
- Available tablet strengths during clinical trials were 1.5mg, 4mg, 9mg, and 25mg.
- Wegovy tablets are not currently approved by the HPRA or EMA and are not available in Ireland at this time.
Wegovy tablets dosage schedule
Wegovy tablets have not yet been approved by the Health Product Regulatory Authority (HPRA) or the European Medicines Agency (EMA), so are not currently available in Ireland. Information regarding doses comes from clinical trials, the manufacturer Novo Nordisk, and guidelines from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) where it has been approved.
Doses are increased gradually to help your body adjust and reduce side effects, though you don’t have to increase each month if you do not feel ready to do so. Currently available doses in the US are:
- 1.5mg
- 4mg
- 9mg
- 25mg
An example of a how a Wegovy tablets dosage schedule may look like is:
Time period | Days | Dose | Stage |
|---|---|---|---|
Month 1 | Days 1–30 | 1.5 mg | Starting dose |
Month 2 | Days 31–60 | 4 mg | Escalation dose |
Month 3 | Days 61–90 | 9 mg | Escalation dose |
Ongoing | Day 91+ | 25 mg | Maintenance dose |
Do you always have to start at 1.5mg?
If you have never taken a semaglutide-based weight loss treatment like Wegovy tablets or Wegovy injections, then you will have to start at the lowest dose of 1.5mg.
This is to help your body get used to the medication. By slowly introducing the treatment, and then gradually increasing the dose, the risks of gastrointestinal side effects like diarrhoea and constipation are reduced.
However, if you have been taking weekly Wegovy injections and are on the 2.4mg dose, Novo Nordisk states you’re able to switch to the once daily 25mg Wegovy tablets under clinical supervision, 7 days after you have taken your last dose.
You can find out more about switching from Wegovy injections to Wegovy tablets with our expert guide.
What is the maintenance dose for Wegovy tablets?
According to Novo Nordisk, the recommended maintenance dose is 25mg, once daily.
Additionally, the manufacturer recommends that if you’re on the 25mg maintenance dose and are struggling to tolerate it, you should consider switching to a 1.7mg Wegovy injection.
Increasing your dose of Wegovy pills
Deciding when to increase your dose isn’t just about following a set timeline. Instead, it should be guided by how you’re responding to treatment day to day, and whether your current dose still feels effective and manageable.
In general, a dose increase may be considered when you feel settled on your current dose without ongoing or disruptive side effects, and when the effects of the medication begin to level off.
This might include noticing that:
- your appetite suppression is less consistent than it was initially
- your progress has started to slow down
In these cases, moving up a dose can help build on the foundation already established.
What to expect when you increase your dose
As your dose increases, the effects of the tablets are more noticable. Like Wegovy injections, higher doses of Wegovy tablets are designed to build on what your body has already adjusted to. You may experience:
- Greater appetite suppression: you feel fuller sooner and for longer, making it easier to eat less.
- Increased weight loss: higher doses are linked to more meaningful weight loss over time.
- Better control over cravings: particularly for high-calorie or snacking habits.
However, it’s also common for side effects to return or become more noticeable when stepping up your dose. These can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, or stomach discomfort, especially in the first few days after increasing.
Are side effects worse at higher doses of Wegovy tablets?
In most medications, side effects are usually more common at higher doses. This is why with Wegovy tablets there is a structured dosing schedule that slowly increases the amount of the active ingredient, semaglutide, you are taking each day.
In the 64-week OASIS-4 clinical trial looking at 25mg maintenance dose, 6.9% of patients taking Wegovy tablets discontinued treatment due to side effects, compared to 5.9% of those on placebo.
If you ever find that side effects are too much on any of the doses, you should speak with your prescribing pharmacist. They can help you manage your symptoms, and may suggest staying at a current dose instead of continuing to increase.
Does everyone have to stick to the same dosage schedule?
No. Your weight loss journey is your own, and the same applies to the dosage schedule you use.
Whether you’re taking Wegovy tablets to lose weight, or you’ve switched from Wegovy injections what dose you take is always up to you.
What can help though, is working with your clinician to find the right dose for your body. Things that may influence what your schedule looks like include how well you feel your current dose is working for you, and how you’re managing any potential side effects.

Frequently asked questions about Wegovy pills dosages
Why are Wegovy tablet doses different to injections?
Aside from the fact that one is a tablet and one is an injection, other differences between the two include:
- Tablets are taken daily, compared to the once-weekly doses offered by injections.
- Injections get the medication directly into the bloodstream, while tablets have to be digested first for the medication to be absorbed.
- Because the active ingredient is absorbed in two different ways, the dosages are different.
When should I take my Wegovy tablets?
According to current guidelines set by the FDA and the manufacturer, Wegovy should be taken as follows:
- One tablet per day, tablet in the morning with a small bit of water.
- Do not take with food, wait at least 30 minutes before taking other oral medication or eating.
Summary of Wegovy tablets dosages
“Wegovy tablets follow a gradual dosing approach, with your treatment usually starting at a lower dose before being increased over time to find the level that suits you best.
“It’s important to remember that the goal isn’t simply to reach the highest dose as fast as possible, but to find the one your body responds to best while remaining manageable. For some people, that may mean staying at a lower dose for longer, depending on how they tolerate the treatment and the results they’re seeing.
“Your prescriber will support you through each step, helping you settle on a dose that feels right for you so you can move forward with confidence and feel reassured that your treatment is working in a way that fits your needs.”
