If you’re taking Wegovy, you may be wondering whether you can still enjoy an alcoholic drink from time to time. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) doesn’t list alcohol as a specific interaction with Wegovy, but that doesn’t mean drinking is completely risk-free.

Alcohol can affect your blood glucose, add extra calories to your diet, and potentially make some common Wegovy side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea, more difficult to manage.

That doesn’t mean having a social life is off the table while you’re taking Wegovy. In this guide, we’ll look at how alcohol may affect your treatment and weight loss journey, when you may need to take extra care, and practical ways to navigate drinking while taking Wegovy.

What happens when you mix Wegovy with alcohol?

The main concern with drinking alcohol on Wegovy isn’t a direct interaction between the two. Instead, some of their effects can overlap, which may make certain side effects harder to manage or require additional care in some circumstances.

Can alcohol make Wegovy side effects worse?

Alcohol may make some Wegovy side effects more difficult to manage, particularly if you’re already experiencing them. The HSE explains that alcohol can cause nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, headaches, and fatigue, while vomiting and diarrhoea during Wegovy treatment can also increase your risk of dehydration.

Acute pancreatitis is also a recognised serious adverse effect of Wegovy. Make sure to seek urgent medical advice if you develop severe, persistent stomach pain, particularly if it spreads to your back.

Does Wegovy stop alcohol cravings?

One early study found that people with obesity taking semaglutide (the active ingredient in Wegovy) reported drinking less alcohol. However, the study does not prove that the medicine caused people to drink less. More research is needed to understand whether Wegovy affects alcohol cravings.

Can you lose weight on Wegovy if you drink alcohol?

Drinking alcohol doesn’t necessarily mean that Wegovy will stop working or that you can’t lose weight. However, alcohol contains calories, so drinking regularly can make it more difficult to maintain the calorie deficit needed for weight loss. The HSE also notes that alcohol can affect your appetite and food choices, potentially adding to your overall calorie intake.

This doesn’t mean one night out will undo your progress. Your overall habits matter more than any individual occasion.

Does alcohol increase your appetite on Wegovy?

It can. The HSE explains that alcohol can increase your appetite and affect your food choices, even while Wegovy is helping to regulate your appetite.

In practice, the drinks themselves may only be part of the picture. Bar snacks, a late-night meal, or eating differently the following day can all add to your overall calorie intake. This doesn’t mean you need to avoid social occasions, but it can help to be mindful of how drinking affects your usual eating habits.

Wegovy, alcohol and diabetes: what should you know?

If you take Wegovy for weight management and have type 2 diabetes, you may need to take extra care with alcohol. Drinking can lower your blood glucose, and Diabetes Ireland warns that this effect can occur hours later or the following morning. This is particularly important if you also use insulin or certain diabetes medicines that can cause hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar).

If you have diabetes, speak to your healthcare team about drinking alcohol alongside your medications and how to manage your blood glucose safely.

Tips for drinking alcohol on Wegovy

If you choose to drink while taking Wegovy, a few simple steps can help you manage how you feel and keep your wider weight loss goals in mind.

“You don’t necessarily have to avoid alcohol completely while taking Wegovy, but pay attention to how you feel. If you’re experiencing side effects, drinking less or taking a break from alcohol may make them easier to manage.”

  • Eat before you drink: Avoid drinking on an empty stomach. Having a balanced meal beforehand can also help you stick to your usual eating habits rather than relying on snacks or takeaway food later in the evening.
  • Stay hydrated Alcohol can contribute to dehydration, so drink water regularly throughout the evening. This can be particularly important if Wegovy is already causing vomiting or diarrhoea. Read our guide to staying hydrated during weight loss for more advice.
  • Take it slowly: Consider spacing out your drinks and alternating alcoholic drinks with water or a low-calorie soft drink. This can help you drink less overall while still enjoying the occasion.
  • Consider alcohol-free alternatives: Alcohol-free beers, wines, and spirits can be useful alternatives when you want to join in without drinking alcohol. Check the label if you’re monitoring your calorie or sugar intake, as these can vary between products. For more inspo on alcohol-free beverages, Lisa Marley, our partner nutritionist, has a few recommendations in this guide.

What is the best alcohol to drink on Wegovy?

There isn’t a specific type of alcohol that’s considered best to drink on Wegovy. If you choose to drink, consider how much alcohol and how many calories your drink contains rather than looking for one particular option.

Lower-alcohol or alcohol-free drinks can help reduce your alcohol intake, while choosing lower-calorie options for either the booze or the mixer may make it easier to stay within your weight loss goals. Whatever you choose, moderation and staying hydrated are more important than the specific drink.

When should you avoid alcohol on Wegovy?

There may be times when avoiding alcohol is the safer or more comfortable choice while taking Wegovy.

  • You're already experiencing Wegovy side effects: If you’re already experiencing nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, or other digestive side effects, alcohol could make you feel worse or make it harder to stay hydrated. Consider waiting until your symptoms have settled before drinking.
  • You've recently started Wegovy or changed dose: Digestive side effects are more common during the period when your Wegovy dose is being increased. Avoiding alcohol while you see how your body responds may make it easier to manage any symptoms that develop.
  • You're at increased risk of hypoglycaemia: If you have diabetes and take insulin or other medicines that can cause hypoglycaemia, drinking alcohol may increase your risk of low blood sugar. Speak to your healthcare team about whether it’s safe for you to drink.
  • You have a history of pancreatitis or another condition affected by alcohol: If you’ve previously had pancreatitis, or have another health condition that alcohol could affect, speak to your clinician before drinking. At myBMI, we don’t prescribe Wegovy to people with a history of pancreatitis.

If you’re worried about needing to avoid alcohol completely, you can always check it with your clinician, and they’ll recommend the best approach.

Get support throughout your treatment

If side effects are making it difficult to manage your Wegovy treatment, you don’t have to deal with them alone. myBMI treatment plans include ongoing clinical support. If you experience side effects, our clinical team can assess your symptoms and advise on how to manage them. Where appropriate, they may prescribe medication free of charge to help manage certain side effects.
