If you've developed thrush while taking Mounjaro, you might be wondering whether your medication is responsible. Whether it's causing discomfort in your mouth or irritation around your genitals, thrush can be unpleasant, frustrating, and difficult to ignore.
Although thrush isn't a recognised side effect of Mounjaro, that doesn't mean you can't experience it during treatment. Several factors can increase your risk of developing a yeast infection, and understanding the possible causes can help you find the right treatment.
In this guide, we'll explore the relationship between Mounjaro and thrush, why infections might occur, and what you can do to prevent and treat them.
What is thrush?
Thrush is a common fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of Candida, a type of yeast that naturally lives on your skin and in your body. It can develop when the normal balance of microorganisms is disrupted, allowing the yeast to multiply.
Thrush can affect different parts of the body, but two common forms are genital thrush and oral thrush.
Genital thrush affects the vagina or penis. Symptoms can include:
- itching, irritation, or redness around the genitals
- soreness or stinging during sex or urination
- thick, white vaginal discharge, which may resemble cottage cheese
- white discharge, redness, or irritation around the head of the penis
Oral thrush affects the mouth and tongue. Common symptoms include:
- white patches inside the mouth that may leave red, sore areas when wiped away
- redness, soreness, or a burning sensation in the mouth
- an unpleasant taste or changes to your sense of taste
- cracks or soreness at the corners of the mouth
Although thrush can be uncomfortable, it's usually treatable with antifungal medication. However, symptoms can resemble those of other conditions, so it's important to get the right diagnosis, particularly if you're experiencing thrush for the first time.
Does Mounjaro cause genital thrush?
Genital thrush isn't listed as a recognised side effect in the official Mounjaro product information, and there's currently no established evidence that Mounjaro directly causes vaginal or penile yeast infections.
However, people with poorly controlled diabetes may be more susceptible to genital thrush, particularly when their blood sugar levels are high. This is because elevated blood sugar can create conditions that encourage Candida to grow.
If you develop genital thrush while taking Mounjaro, don't assume the medication is responsible. Speak to your pharmacist or healthcare team to identify the likely cause and find an appropriate treatment.
Does Mounjaro cause oral thrush?
Oral thrush isn't listed as a recognised side effect in the official Mounjaro product information, and there's no established evidence that Mounjaro directly causes fungal infections in the mouth.
However, oral thrush can develop for several reasons unrelated to your medication. Factors that can increase your risk include:
- having diabetes, particularly if your blood sugar isn't well controlled
- taking certain medications, including antibiotics or steroid inhalers
- wearing dentures, especially if they aren't cleaned regularly
- having a dry mouth
If you notice white patches, soreness, or other unusual symptoms in your mouth while taking Mounjaro, speak to your pharmacist or healthcare team. They can help determine whether you have oral thrush and recommend suitable treatment.
Why might I get thrush while on Mounjaro?
Although Mounjaro isn't known to directly cause thrush, developing an infection during treatment is still possible. Several factors may explain why this happens, even if the medication itself isn't responsible.
One important factor is blood sugar control. High blood sugar levels can increase your risk of thrush, particularly if you have diabetes that isn't well controlled. However, Mounjaro is designed to help lower blood sugar levels, rather than increase them.
Other factors can also contribute, including:
- Antibiotic use: Antibiotics can disrupt the balance of microorganisms that normally help keep Candida under control.
- Dry mouth: Reduced saliva can make it easier for oral thrush to develop.
- Hormonal changes: Pregnancy and other hormonal changes can increase susceptibility to vaginal thrush.
- A weakened immune system: Certain medical conditions or treatments can make it harder for your body to keep fungal infections under control.
These are recognised risk factors for thrush, rather than effects that Mounjaro has been shown to cause.
If you've developed thrush since starting Mounjaro, the timing alone doesn't establish a connection. Your healthcare team can help you identify other possible causes and decide whether further investigation is needed.
How to prevent thrush on Mounjaro
Although there's no specific way to prevent thrush on Mounjaro, as it isn't an established side effect, there are practical steps you can take to reduce your risk of developing a fungal infection.
Keep your blood sugar under control
If you have diabetes, managing your blood sugar levels can help reduce your risk of thrush. Poorly controlled diabetes is a recognised risk factor, so continue following your prescribed treatment plan and speak to your healthcare team if you're struggling to manage your blood sugar.
Practise good genital hygiene
Wash your genital area gently with water and avoid perfumed soaps, shower gels, and other products that may cause irritation. Dry the area thoroughly after washing and choose breathable cotton underwear.
Look after your oral health
Brush your teeth twice a day, clean between your teeth regularly by flossing, and attend routine dental appointments. If you wear dentures, clean them properly and remove them at night.
If you use a steroid inhaler, rinse your mouth with water after each use.
Avoid unnecessary irritation
If you're prone to genital thrush, avoid tight-fitting underwear and change out of damp or sweaty clothing promptly. For oral thrush, staying hydrated may help prevent dry mouth, which can increase your susceptibility to infection. Drinking water will also help you feel your best throughout your weight loss journey. To learn more about the benefits, read our guide to the importance of hydration.
These steps won't guarantee that you avoid thrush, but they can help address some of the factors that contribute to fungal infections.
How to treat thrush
Many cases of thrush can be treated with antifungal medication, but the appropriate treatment depends on the type of infection and your individual circumstances. Tell your pharmacist or healthcare professional that you're taking Mounjaro and mention any other medicines you use so they can check that the treatment is suitable and there are no interactions with the medication you take.

Use the appropriate antifungal treatment
For genital thrush, antifungal treatments are available as creams, vaginal pessaries, or oral tablets. Your pharmacist can check that the proposed antifungal treatment is suitable for you based on your symptoms, medical history, and other medications you take.
Oral thrush is usually treated with an antifungal medicine applied inside the mouth, such as a gel or liquid.
Follow your treatment instructions
Use your medication exactly as directed, even if your symptoms begin to improve. Avoid using additional treatments or home remedies without checking with your pharmacist, as these may not be effective and could cause further irritation.
Know when to seek medical advice
Speak to your pharmacist or GP if this is your first suspected thrush infection, your symptoms keep returning, or treatment isn't working.
You should also seek medical advice if you're pregnant, have a weakened immune system, or have diabetes, particularly if your blood sugar isn't well controlled.
If you're experiencing oral thrush, contact your GP if you have difficulty or pain when swallowing, or if your symptoms haven't improved after a week of treatment with mouth gel.
If you're taking Mounjaro, let your healthcare professional know before starting treatment so they can check that the antifungal medicine is appropriate for you. Don't stop or change your Mounjaro dose without medical advice.
