Wegovy 7.2mg is the highest approved weekly dose of semaglutide for weight management. It offers additional support for people who have not reached their weight loss goals on the standard 2.4mg maintenance dose.
In this guide, our clinicians explain what Wegovy 7.2mg is, how it compares to other treatments, and how myBMI can support you if you're considering the higher dose.
Key points
● Wegovy 7.2mg is the highest approved dose of semaglutide for weight management, designed for patients who need additional support beyond the 2.4mg dose.
● In the STEP UP trial, patients on 7.2mg achieved an average weight loss of around 21%, with almost 1 in 3 losing 25% or more of their body weight.
● The 7.2mg dose is now available in Ireland through myBMI.
What is Wegovy 7.2mg?
Wegovy 7.2mg is a higher maintenance dose of semaglutide, which is the same active ingredient used across all doses of Wegovy. You might consider increasing your dose to 7.2mg if you’re already on 2.4mg but aren’t seeing the results you want.
How does Wegovy 7.2mg work?
“Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It works by mimicking a natural gut hormone that helps regulate your appetite, slow digestion, and support blood sugar control.
“At 7.2mg, the effects of the treatment are stronger. This means it can help further reduce your appetite, potentially leading to greater weight loss when combined with a continuation of the healthy lifestyle habits you introduced while on the lower doses of Wegovy.”

Is Wegovy 7.2mg available in Ireland?
Yes. Wegovy 7.2mg is available in Ireland through myBMI. It’s taken as 3 x 2.4mg injections each week, though a single dose pen is currently being reviewed for approval.
How much weight can you lose on Wegovy 7.2mg?
The STEP UP trial studied approximately 1,400 adults with obesity over 72 weeks. For patients that used the treatment as instructed, and combined it with a healthier diet and more physical activity, the average weight loss was nearly 21% of their starting body weight.
The trial also showed that a significantly higher proportion of patients reached key weight loss milestones at the higher dose, with 93.2% of patients on 7.2mg losing at least 5% of their body weight.
All this said, remember that individual results will vary depending on your starting weight, health conditions, and how closely you follow your diet and exercise plan.
Who is Wegovy 7.2mg for?
Wegovy 7.2mg is designed for people who’ve already been taking Wegovy 2.4mg and either haven't reached their weight loss goals, or want additional support with long-term weight management.
It may be suitable for you if:
- You have been on the 2.4mg dose for at least 4 weeks, and your weight loss has slowed or plateaued.
- You haven't experienced the results you were hoping for at 2.4mg despite following dietary and exercise guidance.
- Your clinician recommends a higher maintenance dose based on your individual health needs.
- You are looking for a higher dose to support long-term weight maintenance after initial weight loss.
When can I switch to Wegovy 7.2mg?
Keep in mind that Wegovy 7.2mg isn’t a starting dose. You must have completed the standard Wegovy titration schedule and been stable on 2.4mg before moving to the higher dose.
Moving to 7.2mg is typically considered once you have been on the 2.4mg dose for at least 4 weeks and your clinician has reviewed how you are responding to treatment.
Switching to 7.2mg should only happen under the guidance of your clinician. Your prescriber will assess whether the higher dose is appropriate based on your progress, how well you're dealing with any side effects, and your overall health.

Wegovy 7.2mg is currently taken as 3 x 2.4mg injections a week.

Potential Wegovy 7.2mg side effects
The most common side effects of Wegovy 7.2mg are largely the same as at lower doses.
This includes nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, and stomach pain. Additional side effects may include headaches, heartburn, fatigue, and hair loss. These are typically mild to moderate and tend to settle as your body adjusts.
In the STEP UP trial, gastrointestinal side effects were reported by 71% of patients on the 7.2mg dose compared with 61% on 2.4mg. Just 3.3% of patients on 7.2mg discontinued treatment due to side effects.
One side effect that is more common at the 7.2mg dose than lower doses is dysaesthesia. This refers to unusual skin sensations such as tingling, burning, numbness, or heightened sensitivity.
In the STEP UP trial, dysaesthesia was reported by around 23% of patients on 7.2mg, compared with approximately 6% on 2.4mg. While uncomfortable, dysaesthesia is not considered dangerous and often resolves on its own or after a dose adjustment.
If you experience any new or worsening side effects after moving to 7.2mg, speak to your clinician, and they can help you navigate your symptoms.
Wegovy 7.2mg vs Mounjaro
At their highest doses, Wegovy and Mounjaro have shown comparable weight loss results in clinical trials. The main differences are in their active ingredients, how they work, and, at present, how you take them.
| Wegovy 7.2mg | Mounjaro 15mg |
|---|---|---|
Active ingredient | Semaglutide | Tirzepatide |
How it works | GLP-1 receptor agonist | Dual GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist |
Average weight loss | Up to 21% (STEP UP trial) | Up to 22.5% (SURMOUNT-1 trial) |
Injection frequency | Once weekly | Once weekly |
Current format | Multi-dose pen, with 3 doses injected each week | Multi-dose pen, with one dose injected each week |
Common side effects | Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, dysaesthesia at higher dose | Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation |
Both treatments are clinically proven and effective. Mounjaro targets 2 hormone receptors (GIP and GLP-1), while Wegovy targets one (GLP-1). Despite this difference, the amount of weight you can lose at the highest doses of both treatments is very similar.
The right treatment depends on your individual health, how you respond to each medication, and your budget. Your prescriber can help you decide whether Wegovy 7.2mg or Mounjaro is more appropriate for your needs.
