As you embark on your weight loss journey, you might be wondering: does Wegovy make you feel sick? It can.

Feeling sick (nausea) is one of the most common side effects of Wegovy, and may affect more than 1 in 10 people, according to the European Medicines Agency (EMA). So, if you’re feeling sick on Wegovy, you’re certainly not alone.

A smaller appetite can be a welcome part of managing your weight. But feeling too nauseous to enjoy your food, or to get on with your day, is a different matter. The good news is that there are practical things you can try to make nausea more manageable. In this guide, we’ll cover what and how to eat, staying hydrated, home remedies, anti-sickness treatments, and when to speak to a healthcare professional.

How do you stop feeling sick on Wegovy?

Small changes to how and what you eat, and sipping fluids throughout the day, can often help you stop feeling sick on Wegovy. Here’s what we recommend to our patients who feel nauseous on their medication:

Eat smaller meals, more often

Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Wegovy, slows down how quickly food leaves your stomach, according to the EMA. Instead of three large meals, try eating smaller portions more often. Both the HSE and a group of experts on glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) medicines recommend this to help manage nausea.

For practical advice, explore our guide to how to eat when your appetite is smaller.

Eat slowly

The HSE advises against eating too quickly when you feel sick. Try putting your fork down between bites and giving yourself time to notice when you’re starting to feel full.

Avoid foods that make nausea worse

When you feel sick, the HSE suggests avoiding:

  • spicy foods, such as curries and chilli
  • fried or greasy foods, such as chips and takeaways
  • foods with a strong smell, including cooking them yourself

The expert group also recommends cutting back on sweet meals, dressings, sauces that are not home-cooked, and canned food. Plainer foods, like crackers and apples, may be easier to manage when you feel sick.

For more information on what to eat, check out our Wegovy diet guide, which covers everything, from habits, to which foods to prioritise or actively avoid.

Stay hydrated

Nausea and vomiting can cause dehydration (loss of fluids), so the Wegovy patient leaflet advises drinking enough fluids to prevent it. If you feel sick, the HSE suggests starting with small sips and building up gradually. Water is a good choice, and the benefits of drinking water go beyond easing nausea.

Sipping a cold drink through the day may feel easier than drinking a lot at once. The HSE also advises against having a large drink with a meal.

Stay upright after eating

The HSE advises against lying down soon after eating. If you also have heartburn or indigestion, the HSE suggests not eating within 3-4 hours of going to bed.

This may help if you get acid reflux, which can sometimes come with nausea. A medical review of reflux notes that slower stomach emptying may add to reflux symptoms, and that raising the head end of your bed may help.

Loose, comfortable clothing can help too. The HSE recommends avoiding clothes that are tight around your waist or tummy.

“If nausea is making mealtimes difficult, don’t feel you have to push yourself through a large meal. Smaller portions can feel more manageable, and staying upright after eating may help if reflux or indigestion is adding to that unsettled feeling.”

Home remedies for Wegovy nausea

A few simple home remedies may help take the edge off Wegovy nausea. The HSE suggests trying:

  • Ginger: sip ginger tea or eat something with ginger in it
  • Peppermint tea: try a cup when you feel queasy
  • Fresh air: step outside or open a window
  • A cold drink: take small sips rather than gulping
  • Distraction: listen to music or watch a film to take your mind off feeling sick

The expert group also lists ginger root and mint among foods that may ease nausea.

A review of clinical trials found that ginger may help relieve nausea, although the studies looked at other causes of sickness, such as pregnancy, rather than weight loss medication. Ginger rarely causes side effects, but it can occasionally lead to mild heartburn or stomach discomfort.

What medication can you take for Wegovy nausea?

If changes to what you eat and drink are not enough, some medicines may help.

  • Antacids: Medicines such as Gaviscon and Rennie relieve indigestion and heartburn, which the HSE notes can come with feeling sick. The HSE advises taking them with or soon after meals, and before bed.
  • Anti-sickness medicine: If you do not feel better in a few days, or your nausea keeps coming back, a doctor may prescribe anti-sickness medicine, according to the HSE.
  • Oral rehydration sachets: If you’re being sick, these powders mixed with water help replace the sugar, salts, and minerals your body has lost, says the HSE.

Always check with a pharmacist or our clinicians before taking new medicine alongside Wegovy. The EMA notes that semaglutide may affect how some medicines taken by mouth are absorbed. The HSE also advises not taking other medicines within 2-4 hours of an antacid.

If your nausea gets worse or does not improve, speak to our clinical team.

If you’re a myBMI patient, our clinical team can assess your symptoms and advise on ways to manage them. Where clinically appropriate, they may consider prescribing medication to help manage certain side effects including nausea.

How long does nausea last with Wegovy?

For most people, nausea on Wegovy is short-lived. In clinical trials, a typical episode of nausea lasted around 8 days, according to the EMA, and the patient leaflet says it usually goes away over time.

In the same trials, 43.9% of people taking Wegovy had nausea at some point, compared with 16.1% of people taking a placebo (dummy treatment). Wegovy vomiting was less common, affecting 24.5% of people, with a typical episode lasting around 2 days.

A study looking at these trials found that digestive side effects, including nausea, were most common during or shortly after a dose increase, and new cases levelled off after about 20 weeks. Almost all of them (98.1%) were mild to moderate.

Should you change your Wegovy dose if you feel sick?

Never change your dose without speaking to a clinician first. If your symptoms are hard to manage, our IMC-registered doctors can assess whether your treatment needs reviewing. The EMA notes that if digestive side effects are significant, a doctor may consider delaying your next dose increase, or moving you back to your previous dose until you feel better.

When should you seek help for sickness on Wegovy?

Speak to our clinicians or your GP if your nausea does not get better in a few days, or keeps coming back, as the HSE advises. You should also get in touch if you notice signs of dehydration, such as:

  • feeling thirsty, tired, or dizzy
  • dark yellow, strong-smelling pee
  • a dry mouth, lips, or tongue
  • peeing less than usual, or fewer than four times a day

Get medical help straight away if you have:

  • severe, long-lasting stomach pain that may move to your back, which can be a sign of an inflamed pancreas (acute pancreatitis), according to the patient leaflet
  • severe constipation with stomach ache, bloating, or vomiting, which the leaflet lists as a sign of a bowel obstruction, a serious side effect
  • confusion, severe dizziness, a fast heartbeat, or no pee all day, which the HSE warns can mean serious dehydration
  • nausea that comes on suddenly with chest pain, pain spreading to your arms, back, neck, or jaw, or shortness of breath, as the HSE warns this could be a heart attack

In an emergency, call 112 or 999. These symptoms can have other causes, so always see a doctor for a proper diagnosis.

Get support with your Wegovy side effects

Feeling sick on Wegovy can be frustrating, but it’s usually temporary, and there’s plenty you can do to feel more comfortable in the meantime. For more information on other side effects, check out our guide to Wegovy side effects.

And if you’re a myBMI patient, you don’t have to manage side effects alone. Every myBMI treatment plan includes ongoing clinical support from our IMC-registered doctors, as well as free side effects medication for nausea, if considered clinically appropriate.
