Whether you’re taking Wegovy as an injection or a pill, you may find that eating feels a little different once you start treatment. You might feel full sooner than you used to, or notice that portions you once ate comfortably now leave you feeling overly full.

Wegovy contains semaglutide, which slows down how quickly food moves through your stomach. As your body adjusts, this can sometimes contribute to digestive side effects such as bloating or nausea. That’s why eating well on Wegovy isn't just about what you eat. It's also about finding the right portion sizes, foods, and eating habits that feel comfortable for you.

In this guide, we’ll look at what to eat while taking Wegovy, foods you may want to limit, and simple ways to make everyday meals feel more comfortable alongside your treatment.

Key points:

  • High-fat, high-sugar, and spicy foods can worsen common Wegovy side effects.
  • Protein, fibre, and proper hydration support appetite control and may help with how well you tolerate the medication.
  • There's no single best Wegovy diet, but balanced, portion-controlled meals improve long-term weight loss results.

Eating well while taking Wegovy

There’s no special “Wegovy diet”, and eating well doesn’t mean giving up the foods you enjoy. Instead, aim to build most of your meals around a variety of nutritious foods, while still making room for the things you love. It’s about finding a balanced way of eating that feels realistic for everyday life, not feeling like you’re permanently “on a diet”. This is the key to sustainable weight loss and, in time, long-term maintenance.

Even so, as you get used to the medication, you may notice changes in your appetite, portion sizes or the foods you feel like eating. Listening to your body and adapting what and how you eat can also help you feel more comfortable if you experience digestive side effects.

With that in mind, there are some foods you may want to prioritise and others you might find easier to limit during treatment.

Practical tips for eating on Wegovy

  • Keep portions smaller: Start with less on your plate. You can always have more if you’re still hungry.
  • Take your time: Eat slowly and pause when you start to feel full, even if there’s food left on your plate.
  • Try smaller, more frequent meals: If a full meal feels like too much, smaller meals throughout the day may feel more manageable.
  • Prioritise protein: Include a source of protein with your meals to help support your muscle mass while losing weight.
  • Stay upright after eating: Avoid lying down straight after a meal, particularly if you’re prone to heartburn or indigestion.

What to eat on Wegovy

When starting Wegovy, you don't need to swap everything in your kitchen or suddenly cook every meal from scratch. A good place to start is with the foods you already enjoy, then think about how you can make your meals balanced and nutritious, particularly as your appetite begins to change.

Try to include a mixture of these food groups across your day:

  • Protein: This doesn't need to mean a chicken breast at every meal. It could be Greek yoghurt at breakfast, tuna in your lunchtime jacket potato or lentils stirred through a curry. Chicken, turkey, salmon, tuna, eggs, cottage cheese, Greek yoghurt, tofu, lentils, chickpeas and beans (especially edamame, kidney, and pinto beans) are all good options.
  • Fruit and vegetables: Aim for plenty of variety across the week, from berries and bananas with breakfast to peppers, broccoli, tomatoes, carrots, and frozen peas with your main meals. Fresh, frozen, and tinned options can all have a place in your diet, so don't worry if your veg drawer isn't always perfectly stocked.
  • Carbohydrates: You don't need to cut out carbs to lose weight. Foods like potatoes, rice, pasta, oats and bread can still form part of balanced meals. Choosing wholegrain and lower-GI options, such as porridge oats, wholegrain bread, brown rice and wholewheat pasta, can be an easy way to add more fibre to your everyday meals. Alongside the fruit and vegetables, carbs help you get more fibre into your diet, which helps with constipation – a common side effect of Wegovy.

You don't have to get the balance perfect at every meal. Some days, dinner might be homemade. Other days, it might be something quick you picked up on the way home. What matters more is building habits that work for your appetite, lifestyle and nutritional needs over time.

Wegovy-friendly meal planning

When your appetite is changing, deciding what to eat at 7pm after a long day can feel like one decision too many. Doing a little preparation earlier in the week means you've already got something nutritious waiting when you're tired, busy or simply not particularly interested in food.

Look for recipes that contain protein, vegetables, and a source of fibre or wholegrain carbohydrates, but are also easy to portion, store and reheat. Dishes like turkey and halloumi stuffed peppers or high-protein sweet potato beef bowls are both delicious and easy to prepare ahead, in batch.

You can make meal prep easier, and often cheaper, by choosing a couple of recipes that use some of the same ingredients to batch cook all at once. For example, chicken, peppers, and spinach could go into wraps one day and a pasta dish or salad the next. You're preparing ingredients once, while still giving yourself enough variety that you don't feel as though you're eating the same lunch five days in a row.

And remember, meal prep doesn't have to mean losing your Sunday afternoon to rows of identical tupperware. Even preparing tomorrow's lunch while making dinner, chopping some vegetables in advance or cooking an extra portion for the freezer counts.

Other simple recipes while on Wegovy

As discussed, taking Wegovy shouldn't mean resigning yourself to plain salads and meals that feel like “diet food”. There are plenty of simple, nutritious recipes that still feel like the kind of food you'd genuinely look forward to eating.

For example:

  • Crispy chilli and garlic roasted edamame makes a simple protein-rich snack when you're not hungry enough for a full meal.
  • Healthy Tuscan-style chicken combines protein and fibre in a comforting main meal that works for an everyday dinner.
  • Raspberry and lemon oat crumble slices are a reminder that eating well doesn't mean sweet treats suddenly have to disappear from your diet.

What if you don't feel hungry?

Some days, a full meal can feel like too much on Wegovy. When your appetite is low, you should focus on getting the nutrition your body needs, with the little food you manage to eat.

Smaller, nutrient-rich meals and snacks may feel easier to digest. If you’re not sure what to reach for, our guide to eating when your appetite is low has practical tips for getting more nutrition from the food you can comfortably manage.

“Finding the right foods and portion sizes can take a little trial and error, especially while your body is adjusting to Wegovy. If certain meals seem to make nausea, bloating or heartburn worse, don’t feel you have to push through it. Make small changes and speak to your clinical team if your side effects are becoming difficult to manage.”

What foods to avoid while taking Wegovy

There aren't any foods you have to completely avoid while taking Wegovy. However, because Wegovy slows digestion, you might find that some foods don't sit quite as comfortably as they used to. So, you may want to eat less of the following foods, especially while you're adjusting to treatment or higher doses.

Fried and high-fat foods

Because semaglutide slows how quickly food leaves your stomach, high-fat and fried foods may worsen nausea, bloating and digestive discomfort.

Foods you might want to limit include:

  • chips and other deep-fried foods
  • fried chicken
  • sausages, bacon and fatty cuts of meat
  • creamy sauces
  • large portions of cheese
  • pastries and rich desserts

That doesn't mean you need a completely low-fat diet. Foods containing unsaturated fats, such as olive oil, avocado, nuts, seeds and oily fish, should still be part of a balanced diet.

High-sugar foods and drinks

Biscuits with your afternoon tea or pudding after Sunday lunch can still have a place in your diet. It's more about how often and how much you're having.

Foods and drinks high in added sugar can add significant calories without necessarily providing the nutrition you need. This can be particularly relevant when Wegovy has reduced your appetite, and you have less room for food overall. Sugary and refined foods may also aggravate digestive symptoms for some people.

Try to have foods such as sweets, cakes, biscuits, sugary cereals, fizzy drinks and desserts less often, rather than thinking of them as completely off limits.

Spicy foods

Spicy dishes may aggravate digestive symptoms such as reflux or discomfort, especially while taking Wegovy. If you notice a connection, try reducing the heat rather than abandoning your favourite meals altogether. That could be as simple as ordering a milder spice bag or using less chilli when cooking at home.

If spicy food doesn't cause you any problems, there's no need to avoid it simply because you're taking Wegovy.

Ultra-processed foods

Fast food and packaged snacks are convenient, and realistically there will be days when cooking from scratch isn't happening. You don't need to feel guilty about that.

However, many ultra-processed foods are high in calories while offering little nutritional value. When you're eating smaller amounts on Wegovy, prioritising nutrient-rich foods can help you make the most of what you are able to eat.

Foods to eat less often might include:

  • fast food and takeaway meals
  • crisps and similar packaged snacks
  • biscuits, cakes, and pastries
  • confectionery
  • highly processed ready meals

Ultimately, it's about balance rather than banning foods. Notice what leaves you feeling comfortable and satisfied, and what seems to make your Wegovy side effects worse. Over time, you'll get a better sense of what works for your body.

Wegovy and dietary supplements

You don’t automatically need vitamins or supplements just because you’re taking Wegovy. A balanced, varied diet is still the best place to start. However, if your appetite is regularly low or you’re struggling to get enough nutrition from food, speak to your clinician. They can help you understand whether additional nutritional support could be helpful.

It’s also worth checking before starting any new supplements, as some may affect your blood glucose or make digestive side effects more noticeable. Berberine and inositol, for example, can affect blood glucose and may also cause digestive side effects.

Wegovy and protein shakes

Shakes can be a convenient way to top up on protein while on Wegovy, particularly on days when your appetite isn't quite keeping up with your nutritional needs.

Protein is particularly important during weight loss because it helps support the maintenance of muscle mass, especially as you're becoming more active. However, shakes don't need to replace ordinary food if you're able to eat enough protein through your meals. As protein shakes can be high in calories, they should form part of your overall diet rather than added on top.

Wegovy and drinking

For day-to-day hydration, water should be your go-to. But it doesn’t have to be the only thing you drink on Wegovy. Juice and soft drinks can also be fine to have, although it’s worth being mindful of sugar and calories. When it comes to alcohol and energy drinks, however, there are a few extra things to consider.

Alcohol

For many people, the occasional alcoholic drink can still fit into a balanced lifestyle while taking Wegovy, whether that’s a glass of wine with dinner or a few drinks at a wedding. However, alcohol may worsen some Wegovy side effects like dizziness and nausea, so it’s worth taking things slowly and paying attention to how you feel.

Coffee

There’s no documented direct interaction between Wegovy and caffeine, so you don't necessarily need to give up your morning coffee or avoid caffeine altogether. However, high-caffeine drinks may make symptoms such as nausea, digestive discomfort or a faster heart rate more noticeable for some people.

Energy drinks

Because of their high sugar and caffeine contents, you might want to be more careful around energy drinks. If grabbing a can on your commute or during the afternoon slump is part of your usual routine, check the caffeine content and notice how your body responds, particularly when you're first starting Wegovy or adjusting to a new dose.

If you're feeling unusually tired or regularly relying on energy drinks to get through the day, it's also worth looking at the bigger picture, including whether you're eating enough, staying hydrated and getting enough sleep.

The key is finding what works for you

While taking Wegovy, it's important to find a balance that keeps you nourished, comfortable, and able to enjoy food. As your appetite changes, give yourself time to learn what portions and meals work best for you.
